Bulk Rename Files with Lupas Rename

Lupas Rename is a versatile and useful application that allows for the bulk renaming of files.

If you go to the Lupas Rename website, you'll see that the latest version, 5.0, came out in 2005. Don't let that dissuade you from using the software. The program has many nice features:
  • It's portable. You can run it off a USB stick.
  • It's lightweight.
  • It's easy to use.
  • And, of course, it's free.
(A full list of features is found at the site or the included help file.)

Lupas Rename allows you do rename files and extensions, plus it can autonumber, all in bulk. The rename feature is very flexible. See below for a picture of the file and extension rename options:

As you can see, you can crop, replace, and insert in several different ways. You can also easily change case and remove accent marks. The good thing is the changes are previewed in the right pane so that there is no guesswork. Furthermore, there is an undo function that is easy to execute if for some reason you change your mind or messed up even after seeing the preview.

It's also easy to autonumber:

Drawbacks? The only one is that the program is not being actively developed it appears. The forum is not up; the FAQ have never been developed. However, I have never had any problems in figuring out how to do anything, as it's a straightforward interface. The only thing I have ever looked up is how to edit metatags for mp3s. The included help file had that answer and overall is extensive enough to answer most questions.

So although Lupas Rename hasn't been updated in a while, it still beats the other bulk renaming utilities I've used because it's fast, lightweight, powerful, and portable.
