Convert AVIs to Smaller Video Format

If you have AVI format videos that you would like to reduce in size, you may be interested in the freeware platform Super.  Super stands for Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer; it plays, renders, and converts many different media formats, and includes a legion of codecs, so it's very unlikely you would have to search for and install additional codecs.

Super has a slightly unwieldy GUI, but isn't hard to learn how to use.  It gets mostly good reviews by users and download website editors.

I originally tried using Windows Movie Maker to convert AVIs, but found it slow and wasn't pleased with the quality of its converted files.  Super does a better job in my opinion, and since it can do much more, and is free, I think it's worth trying out to see if you like it.
