How to Keep a Running Total in Excel

Have you ever needed to keep a running total in an Excel spreadsheet?  If so, here's a formula for doing so:

Say your data starts in A1.  If you want to keep a running total in the adjacent column, B, you'd enter this formula in B1 and use the fill handle to copy the formula over the desired range of cells:

=SUM($A$1:$A1)
